Brief Description:

The primary goal of an AI Institute in Astronomy is to bring together astronomy and AI experts to tackle important challenges in these two domains. An AI Institute will serve as a hub and resource for the broader astronomical community by making tools publicly available and by promoting the education and training of the astronomical community in AI methods.

Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting two, (2), proposals in response to this call. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application and review process for interested applicants.

Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting two, (2), pre-proposals in response to the three, (3), themes outlined in NSF 23-610. The application associated with this description concerns theme 1: AI for Astronomical Sciences

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application, review and selection process for applications submitted to all themes.

Theme 1 proposals can address any relevant combination of AI use cases. Examples of use cases, (non prescriptive), are available on pg.8 of the RFP.

Indirect Cost (F&A) Limitations:
Group, or theme, 1 projects (AI for Astronomical Sciences), will be jointly funded with the Simons Foundation. Half of the total allowed budget (up to $10M) must be prepared by following the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide, (PAPPG), and the other half of the budget, (again, up to $10M) must be prepared by following instructions from the Simons Foundation. Note that the Simons Foundation has a specific indirect cost rate policy. Additional information is available on the Simons Foundation website.

    Note:
    The Simons Foundation is committed to co-funding Institutes in Theme 1. Institutes funded in partnership with the Simons Foundation will receive two separate awards of up to $10M, one in the form of a cooperative agreement at NSF to be administered under the Program in accordance with standard NSF policies and procedures, and one award from the Simons Foundation  in accordance with the Simons Foundation award procedures using standard Simons Foundation award terms, conditions and reporting requirements
