Brief Description:

The ADA Initiator Pathway opportunity is a two-phased award designed to support the transition of postdoctoral scientists from mentored training to independent research faculty.

Each DUNS/EUI defined area of Harvard University may submit one nomination to the sponsor (Initiator/postdoc, or Accelerator/Early Career Faculty)

While a single application is open to all eligible applicants, reviews will be carried out at the local level.



Description:

The ADA Initiator Pathway opportunity is a two-phased award designed to support the transition of postdoctoral scientists from mentored training to independent research faculty.

Each DUNS/EUI defined area of Harvard University may submit one nomination to the sponsor (Initiator/postdoc, or Accelerator/Early Career Faculty)

While a single internal application is open to all eligible applicants, reviews will be carried out at the local level.

 Two distinct phases of research support:
  • Phase 1 provides up to two years of support for mentored training at a maximum of $100,000 per year (including 10% indirect costs).
  • 75% to 100% effort is required.
  • Phase 2 provides up to five years of support for independent research at a maximum of $325,000 per year (including 30% indirect costs).
  • 50% to 75% effort is required.

PI Contact Information, Title, and Biographical Sketch, including current, past, and pending funding. 5 pages max., https://grants.nih.gov/grants/forms/biosketch.htm
  • Proposal title. Do not use symbols, use full names instead, if applicable
  • Selection of Research Type 
  • Selection of Diabetes Type
  • Selection of Therapeutic Goal most relevant to the proposed research
  • Scientific Abstract, 250 words max., do not use special symbols, instead, use the full word/term. The Abstract should be written in the third person.

A technical description of the proposed work that includes a background, hypothesis, supporting rationale, specific aims, research design, and relevance to a cure, prevention, and/or treatment of diabetes.


  • Move the Needle Explanation, 150 words max.

Describe how the proposed research has the potential to significantly improve the lives of people at risk of diabetes or living with the disease


  • Letters of Support

The name, title, and affiliation of three individuals who would provide letters of recommendation in the event of nomination. One author must be your mentor/ Advisor or Department Chair, the other two authors should be past or current collaborators


  • Budget Narrative. Consulting budget guidelines established by the ADA (downloadable file provided within the application) applicants are asked to provide a broad summary of costs associated with their proposal. A detailed budget is not requested. 
SPH Applicants
In addition to completing the HUFP application, HSPH applicants should submit a brief (non-binding) Notice of Intent to alever@hsph.harvard.edu no later than April 28, 2023. The NOI should include: PI name, mentor name, department, name of award (Accelerator or Initiator) and a brief (1-2 sentence) description of the proposed project



Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must currently be in research training positions, (postdoctoral fellow, research fellowship) and have no more than seven, (7), years of research training following their terminal doctoral degree
  • Applicants cannot currently hold a NIH K99/R00 grant
