Brief Description:

The ADA Pathway Accelerator opportunity prioritizes submissions from Early Career Faculty that aim to advance existing knowledge and discovery gained from the basic sciences for eventual translation to the benefit of patients and the population at large. The ideal applicant will propose innovative translational research that will be an important step towards the eventual goal of improving the lives of people at risk of diabetes or living with the disease.

Each DUNS/UEI defined area of Harvard may submit one proposal, either Accelerator or Initiator (open only to Postdocs). All eligible early career faculty applicants are to apply using this internal application. Reviews will be carried out at the school level.

  • Awards are up to five years and up to $325,000/ year, including 30% for indirect costs.
  • Applicants must devote at least 75% of total time and effort towards research during the period of funding, with a commitment of 25% to 50% effort towards their Accelerator Award. These percentages include time dedicated to the ADA Award in addition to grants supported by other funding agencies.

  • Proposal title. Do not use symbols, use full names instead, if applicable
  • Selection of Research Type 
  • Selection of Diabetes Type
  • Selection of Therapeutic Goal most relevant to the proposed research
  • Scientific Abstract, 250 word max., do not use special symbols, instead, use the full word/term. The Abstract should be written in the third person.

A technical description of the proposed work that includes a background, hypothesis, supporting rationale, specific aims, research design, and relevance to a cure, prevention, and/or treatment of diabetes.

  • Move the Needle Explanation, 150 words max.

Describe how the proposed research has the potential to significantly improve the lives of people at risk of diabetes or living with the disease


  • Budget Narrative. Following budget guidelines established by the ADA (and provided within the application) applicants are asked to provide a budget narrative of costs associated with their proposal. A detailed budget is not requested. 
Attention SPH Applicants:

In addition to completing the HUFP application, HSPH applicants should submit a brief (non-binding) Notice of Intent to alever@hsph.harvard.edu no later than April 28, 2023.
The NOI should include: PI name, mentor name, department, name of award (Accelerator or Initiator) and a brief (1-2 sentence) description of the proposed project



Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must hold independent faculty positions and have demonstrated independent productivity in diabetes research
  • Applicants may currently hold independent NIH funding (K or R awards, including an initial NIH R01, but must not have applied for, or received, an NIH R01 renewal or a second R01 award.
  • The inclusion of a Co-PI/s is not permitted
