The Public Interest Technology University Network, (PIT-UN), is pleased to announce the launch of the Year 4 Challenge. Please consult the "Eligibility" section of this announcement regarding the submission of new proposals and submissions from those those who have previously received a PIT-UN Award.
In response to the Year 4 Challenge the Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal review and selection process for all interested and eligible applicants.

Please consult the "Eligibility" section of this announcement regarding the submission of new proposals and submissions from those those who have previously received a PIT-UN Award.

In response to the Year 4 Challenge the Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal review and selection process for all interested and eligible applicants.


For its fourth year, PIT-UN seeks proposals related to one of the following priority areas:
  • Educational Offerings
  • Career Pipeline/Placement
  • Faculty & Institution Building
  • Strengthening the PIT University Network
Proposals should align with one of the following two funding tranches.
Note- Of the three new proposals Harvard may submit, only one proposal can be in the $90,001 to $180,000 tranche
  • Tranche 1: up to $90,000
  • Tranche 2: $90,001 to $180,000


Application Information:

Applicants will be asked/asked to providethe following (this information will appear again on each applicant's individual electronic dashboard)

  • Answer one pre-qualification question
  • PI Name and CV
  • Co-PI(s) Name and CV, as applicable
  • Collaborator Name(s), as applicable
  • Names of individuals who should be included in correspondence
  • Proposal title
  • Proposal Elevator Pitch (80 word limit)
  • Self- Identification of proposal in regards to lobbying, communication with minors, data collection, and research collection
  • Project Start and End dates
  • Selection of proposal priority area (areas are listed within the application)
  • Additional selection of up to four (4) issue areas as they relate to the proposal priority area (areas are listed within the application)
  • Project Plan (750 word limit)
  • Estimate of total funds requested, inclusive of an indirect rate set at 20% of total direct costs
  • Selection of funding tranche
  • Budget narrative
  • Acknowledgement of effort regarding any institutional support associated with the proposal





Eligibility Criteria:

In this fourth year of the challenge, PIT-UN will accept the following types of proposals in response to its RFP:
  • New projects that have not received prior funding from the PIT-UN Challenge
  • Projects that have received prior funding from the PIT-UN Challenge in 2019**, 2020, or 2021 and are applying for additional funding to continue and/or scale their project
  • Harvard University, as an existing PIT-UN membe,r may submit up to three proposals for new projects
  • Only one of the three proposals can fall within tranche 2: $90,001 to $180,000 (inclusive of direct and indirect costs)

  • **Proposals that received funding from the PIT-UN Challenge in 2019 and have received additional funding in both 2020 and 2021 are not eligible to apply for additional funding this year to continue and/or scale their project.**
  • **Proposals that received funding from the PIT-UN Challenge in 2019, but only received one year of additional funding in either 2020 or 2021 may apply for additional funding this year to continue and/or scale their work.**

This competition is enabled for Proxy applicants. Before beginning an application, Proxies will be asked to locate their Principal Investigator in HUFP. If your PI is not registered in HUFP, please ask them to create their profile using their HarvardKEY. Proxies should never "Add User" in HUFP.
