Centers must focus their scholarly activities on exploring the ethical, legal, or societal implications of AI.

Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting one (optional) draft and one proposal to the NEH. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal competition and proposal selection.

Description:

The NEH Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence program will create new Centers of scholarly discourse and learning, each one a nexus for collaborative efforts that reach across disciplinary lines to gain a more holistic understanding of AI in the modern world.

Proposals should engage in at least two activities that support research into the ethical, legal, or societal implications of AI. Appropriate activities may include but are not limited to: collaborative research and writing efforts; workshops or lecture series; education and mentoring; and the creation of digital tools to increase or advance scholarly discourse about AI. The NEH is particularly interested in projects that explore the impacts of AI-related technologies on truth, trust, and democracy; safety and security; and privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties.

Projects can be up to three years in duration, and up to $750,000 ($500,000 in outright funds plus $250,000 in Federal Matching Funds)

Note: The internal application resembles the NEH's optional Application Draft form, due to the NEH by January 10, 2024. This date is separate from the February 14, 2024 submission deadline for all applications to this opportunity.
Applicants are encouraged to visit the NEH's Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence website in order to familiarize themselves with the full scope of this opportunity.
